Kapelle Bessin

Kapelle Bessin is an octagonal brick structure built on a sandstone foundation with a roof covered in decorative glazed tiles. Brick bands accent the walls, and a wooden bell tower stands beside the main chapel building.

Stralsund Mayor Matthias Darne funded construction of this chapel in 1482, establishing it as a local place of worship. A wooden bell tower was added in 1650, expanding the structure to meet the growing needs of the surrounding area.

The chapel hosts weddings, baptisms, and small musical performances, making it an active gathering space for the village community. Its baroque altar and historic pews create an intimate setting where local events still take place today.

The chapel is accessible during summer months for visitors to explore the interior and appreciate the architectural details. The building is small and intimate, so visiting on a clear day helps you see the decorative elements and historic furnishings better.

Medieval ceiling paintings still decorate the interior, displaying religious imagery across the walls and vault. The original fifteenth-century bell continues to ring from the wooden tower, creating an unbroken sound connection across five centuries.
