Miniatur Wunderland, Model railroad museum in Hamburg-Mitte, Germany.
Miniatur Wunderland is a model railroad museum in Hamburg-Mitte with more than 1000 digitally controlled trains and over 260,000 miniature figures. The exhibition spreads across several floors with landscapes from different countries and continents.
Frederick Braun opened the museum in 2001 after visiting a model train shop in Zurich. The first three sections showed Knuffingen and regions from central Germany.
The layout presents Hamburg as its home city through the port and warehouse district, while visitors also walk through American canyons and Italian coastlines. Each region follows its own rhythm with commuter trains, cargo ships, and airplanes arriving at tiny terminals.
The museum opens early on weekend mornings and closes between 18:00 and 21:00 depending on the season. Visitors should plan at least two hours to view the different sections calmly.
Each section shifts between day and night every 15 minutes, with nearly 390,000 LEDs lighting buildings, streets, and vehicles. Visitors can also watch a working miniature airport with planes taking off and landing.
