Autobahnkapelle „Jesus – Brot des Lebens“, Motorway chapel in Geeste, Germany
The Autobahnkapelle Jesus-Brot des Lebens is located at the Heseper Moor rest area along the A31 motorway between Emden and Bottrop, accessible from both directions. The building holds around 50 people and provides a space for prayer and reflection directly beside the highway.
The chapel opened in 2000 after a support association was founded in 1997 to plan and finance the construction. The project emerged as part of developing amenities at rest stops along this major transport corridor.
The chapel serves both Protestant and Catholic congregations, creating a shared space for different Christian groups to worship together. This joint use reflects how communities in the Emsland region cooperate across denominational lines.
The chapel is located at a rest stop with parking for cars, buses, and trucks and remains open 24 hours. Travelers can stop anytime to find a moment of quiet without worrying about opening hours.
The building was constructed using local peat-fired bricks in traditional Emsland style and features a chimney that serves as a bell tower. Large windows display biblical scenes and fill the interior with natural light.
