Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen Nature Park

The Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen Nature Park covers moorland with heathland, peat bogs, meadows, and grain fields across roughly 217 square kilometers. The park straddles the border between Lower Saxony and the Netherlands with different habitats for plants and animals.

The area was once Central Europe's largest continuous moorland, but centuries of peat extraction transformed it over time. The nature park was established in 2006 to preserve the landscape for the future.

Both sides of the border feature visitor centers where you can learn about the history of moorland and local conservation efforts. The places show how important this landscape is to the people living nearby.

The park offers flat hiking and cycling routes equipped with parking areas and visitor facilities. You can explore the area with standard gear and find information and amenities on both sides of the border.

The area underwent cross-border redevelopment between 2015 and 2019 that linked economic development with landscape protection. This collaboration shows how neighboring countries can work together to care for nature.
