Benders Marie, Historic restaurant in Altstadt, Düsseldorf, Germany
Benders Marie is a building in the Altstadt that sits at Andreasstrasse 13 and long housed a restaurant on its ground floor. The facade displays marble plaques with gold-framed inscriptions showing the establishment's name and founding year.
The building was founded in 1662, making it among the oldest establishments in Düsseldorf's Altstadt. After centuries of change and upheaval, it underwent complete renovation in 2004 with a three-story extension while keeping its historic core intact.
The place served as a gathering spot for local clubs and associations who made it their regular meeting point. Its signature dish of mussels prepared in local style brought recognition far beyond the immediate neighborhood.
The Hotel St. Andreas operates on the upper floors following the 2004 renovation, sharing the building with shops and other businesses. Visitors will find the site centrally located in the Altstadt with convenient street access and easy orientation.
The singer and accordionist Marianne Plum launched her career here during the 1950s, leaving a mark on the place with her performances. A portrait of her remains displayed inside the building to this day.
