Stadthaus

The Stadthaus is an administrative building in Bonn featuring a rectangular layout with four-story corner turrets that rise above the main structure. Its mansard roofs and internal courtyards create a balanced composition oriented toward Mühlheimer Platz.

The building was constructed between 1920 and 1925 under architect German Bestelmeyer as an administrative center for French occupation forces following World War I. In the decades after the war, it housed key federal ministries before being adapted into a cultural and educational facility.

The name refers to the public house that once occupied this location, connecting the building to centuries of civic life in the city. Today visitors experience this continuity as they explore how the building serves educational and cultural functions.

The building stands on a former bastion of the city's fortifications directly across from the University of Bonn, making it easy to locate. The interior layout features clear pathways and open courtyards that help visitors navigate and orient themselves.

Between 1949 and 1957, it housed the Federal Ministry for All-German Affairs, an institution focused on addressing Germany's division during the Cold War period. This ministry's presence reflects the building's role during a critical chapter of postwar German history.
