Stift Herzebrock, Benedictine monastery in Herzebrock-Clarholz, Germany

Stift Herzebrock is a monastery complex in Herzebrock-Clarholz featuring a church, residential quarters, and service buildings from multiple historical periods. The structures show different architectural styles from Romanesque through modern times arranged within a walled compound.

The monastery was founded in the early medieval period as an Augustinian house before transitioning to Benedictine sisters during the Middle Ages. After secularization in 1803, it remained in religious use and continues to function as a convent today.

The community of Benedictine sisters who live here shapes the daily rhythm of the complex with their presence in the chapels and shared spaces. Visitors can observe how religious practice continues to structure life within the buildings.

The complex allows some visitor access, though areas reserved for monastic life remain closed to the public. It is best to check beforehand about current opening hours and which sections are open for viewing.

The twin towers of the Romanesque church date to the 12th century and have survived multiple fires and reconstructions of the complex. They are among the oldest surviving parts of the entire site and continue to define its appearance.
