Automobile Welt Eisenach occupies building O2, a listed 1935 industrial block with a decorative brick facade, a steel-and-glass bay over the central staircase and 30-metre halls on three floors. The exhibition opened here on 4 June 2005 and covers Eisenach vehicle production from 1899 through Dixi, BMW, EMW, IFA and Wartburg to Opel.
Automobile manufacturing in Eisenach started in the late 1800s and became central to the city's economic development. The museum today preserves the memory of this industrial period.

Building O2, erected in 1935 to plans by Munich architect P. Rinke, has a decorative clinker facade, a steel-and-glass oriel above the south stairwell and 4.5-metre storey heights. After 1945 it served mainly for administration; partition walls added then were removed during gutting around 1995. A roughly 40 m² factory model shows the site as it stood when car production ended in 1991.
