Diakonissenstift Eisenach, Bauwerk in Deutschland
The Diakonissenstift Eisenach is a building complex at the northeast corner of Karlsplatz, grouped with the Nikolaikirche and incorporating historic structures. The current main building was constructed between 1933 and 1935, with an extension added in the 1990s at the corner of Nikolaistrasse and Schillerstrasse to serve as residential housing and administrative center of the Evangelical Lutheran Diakonissenhaus Foundation.
The foundation was established in 1872 by Anna von Eichel as a small nursing station, and expanded significantly after purchasing a former Benedictine monastery in 1876. The community opened a hospital in 1896 and constructed the current main building between 1933 and 1935 to serve as residence and administrative headquarters for their growing work.
For over a century, this complex served as the home of a community of deaconesses dedicated to nursing and caring for people in need. Today it remains a gathering place where people worship, reflect, and pilgrims rest during their journey to Santiago de Compostela.
The complex is centrally located at Karlsplatz near the Nikolaikirche and easily accessible from the city center. Visitors can view the grounds, attend regular church services, or use the guest accommodations as a rest stop, particularly those following the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
A memorial erected in 1926 in front of the building honors doctors who died in World War I, keeping their names and service visible to the community. The site also functions as a rest stop on the reactivated ecumenical pilgrimage route from Görlitz to Vacha, where visitors can converse and pray with the sisters.
