St.-Georgsbrunnen, Medieval water well in Market Square, Eisenach, Germany
The St.-Georgsbrunnen is a water well with an octagonal base on Eisenach's marketplace, topped with a sandstone statue of Saint George in golden armor defeating a dragon. The structure draws water from multiple springs through a system of wooden channels running beneath the surface.
Hans Leonhard, the city architect and stonemason, built this well in 1549 as an important addition to Eisenach's infrastructure. The work was created during a period when the city was modernizing and expanding its public facilities.
The fountain displays Saint George, who also appears on Eisenach's coat of arms, showing the city's connection to its patron saint through medieval craftsmanship. Visitors can observe this figure and understand why it holds meaning for the town's identity.
The well is located on the east side of Eisenach's marketplace and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors should keep in mind this is an outdoor historical monument, so weather protection and comfortable shoes are recommended.
In the 1990s, the Eisenacher Gewerbeverein established the Hanjörgfest festival in May to celebrate this medieval monument. The festival brings visitors together each year to honor the history and craftsmanship of this special well structure.
