Georgenkirche Eisenach, Gothic church in Eisenach, Germany.
St. George's Church, known locally as Georgenkirche, is a Gothic hall church in the center of Eisenach, topped by a neo-baroque tower that is visible from many parts of the town. The interior holds furnishings from several periods, giving the space a layered appearance.
The church was first recorded in 1196 and was rebuilt and expanded several times over the following centuries while keeping its Gothic hall structure. The tower was added and later reworked in a neo-baroque style during the modern period.
The church has deep ties to the Bach family, and Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized here in 1685. The baptismal font used at that ceremony is still in the building and visible to visitors today.
The church is open on most days, but hours can change depending on the season and whether services are being held. Checking ahead before your visit is a good idea, especially on Sundays or public holidays.
The five bells hanging in the main tower were not all made at the same time and come from different periods in the church's history. Hearing them together is a small reminder that the building has been continuously changed and added to over time.
