Bergbauwanderweg Alte Haase, Mining trail in Sprockhövel and Hattingen, Germany.
Bergbauwanderweg Alte Haase is a 9 kilometer trail running through Sprockhövel and Hattingen with former mining sites and industrial structures scattered throughout. Along the route you will find preserved mine shafts, old machinery, and information panels explaining how the mining industry once operated here.
This region became a center of coal mining during industrialization, with numerous pits driving the economy of the Ruhr area from the 1800s onward. Many of these mines remained active into the 20th century before closure, and their remains now form the backbone of this walking route.
The trail reveals how miners worked in this region, with old equipment and information boards showing their daily tasks and skills. The stops along the way tell stories of hard labor that defined the local communities.
The trail is open year-round and has parking areas at the Sprockhövel and Hattingen starting points. Public transport connections are available if you prefer to arrive by bus or train.
Segments of the original mining railway tracks remain visible and preserved along the trail in several locations. These old rail lines connected the various mine entrances and reveal how coal transport was logistically organized.
