Bergische Museumsbahnen, Tramway museum in Wuppertal, Germany.
Bergische Museumsbahnen is a tramway museum in Wuppertal where historic tram cars run on original tracks through the Kaltenbach valley. The line follows the natural slopes and curves of the terrain and serves several stops spread along the route.
The tracks through the Kaltenbach valley were once part of the regular tram network serving the wider region and carried local passengers for decades. After regular service ended, a group of enthusiasts took over the line and its remaining vehicles to keep them in operation.
The trams still run through small villages along the valley, so a ride today feels much like it did for local residents decades ago. The wooden seats and manual doors inside the old cars give a direct sense of everyday travel from a time before modern transport.
The easiest starting point is Kohlfurther Brücke station, which has direct train connections from Wuppertal city center. Since the stops are spread through the valley and walking between them is part of the visit, sturdy footwear makes the day more comfortable.
Some of the tram cars on display were originally built for other German cities and only arrived in the Bergisches Land after their regular service ended there. This means a single visit lets you see vehicles from different city networks side by side, each with its own original livery and interior fittings.
