Breitenstein, Mountain summit in Bavaria, Germany.
Breitenstein is a mountain summit in the Bavarian Prealps near Fischbachau, with two distinct peaks reaching around 1,622 meters. The massif rises steeply above the surrounding valley and is clearly visible from a long distance.
The mountain served shepherds and travelers as a reference point in the region for centuries. Over time, paths and alpine huts were established, opening the area to hikers from beyond the local communities.
The alpine huts along the trail, including Kesselalm, are still in operation and serve regional Bavarian food. Hikers gather there in the same way they have for generations, sharing simple meals after the climb.
The ascent typically starts from Fischbachau and can be done via several routes with different levels of effort required. Good physical condition is advised, especially for the direct route to the top.
In winter, the mountain draws ski tourers looking for routes away from crowded resorts and groomed slopes. The snow-covered ridgeline offers views that are quite different from what summer hikers see.
