Botanischer Garten der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Botanical garden with Chinese section at Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany.
The Botanical Garden of Ruhr University Bochum spans several hectares and displays diverse habitats from tropical houses to desert environments. The grounds feature regional plant collections from different continents and multiple large glasshouses with varying climate zones.
The garden was founded in 1968 and opened to the public in 1971. A tropical house was added in 1976 and a desert house in 1988, while the Chinese garden Qian Yuan was built between 1986 and 1990.
The Chinese garden Qian Yuan displays traditional southern Chinese design with a central pond and winding paths throughout. Visitors can experience the characteristic spatial arrangement and plant selection that define this style of garden art.
The garden is easy to navigate with clearly marked paths, and the various glasshouses are distributed across the grounds. Comfortable footwear is recommended since there are some elevation changes and paths can be slippery in wet conditions.
The garden houses a notable collection of about 350 species of Euphorbia, a plant family with unusual shapes and structures. This specialized collection is complemented by rare cycads and plants from mountain regions that are difficult to find elsewhere.
