Neu-Venedig, Residential district with canals in Rahnsdorf, Germany.
Neu-Venedig is a residential neighborhood in southeastern Berlin defined by five interconnected canals spanned by thirteen bridges that link private properties and garden plots. The waterways create a network where residents access their homes and gardens by both land and water.
The neighborhood was created in 1926 when local planners drained marshy land and built the canal system to establish residential plots between two lakes. This project transformed unusable terrain into a populated district.
People here live close to the water and gather throughout the year for events that celebrate boating, fishing, and outdoor life on the canals.
The district is accessible by public transportation, with waterways suitable for small boats and canoes that navigate between private docks. Visitors can explore the area on foot along the banks or by water depending on their preference.
Around 450 waterside properties feature small villas and summer houses accessible by both water channels and walking paths, making dual access a defining feature. This combination of water and land routes is unusual for a Berlin residential area.
