Neuzelle Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Neuzelle, Germany
Neuzelle Abbey is a Cistercian monastery in Neuzelle covering around five hectares with multiple buildings. The complex includes two churches with ribbed vaults and wall paintings, a former carriage house, and historic gardens.
Henry the Illustrious, Margrave of Meissen and Lusatia, founded Nova Cella in 1268 to honor his wife Agnes. The originally Gothic buildings were transformed into Baroque architecture starting in 1650.
Two parish churches within the abbey walls serve both Catholic and Protestant communities for their worship services today. The churches display painted scenes of biblical events on their walls, offering visitors insight into 18th-century religious imagery.
Visitors can explore the grounds during daylight hours and join guided tours through the churches and museum. The gardens provide a quiet space for walking, while exhibition rooms remain accessible throughout the year.
Monks from Heiligenkreuz Abbey in Austria refounded the monastery in 2018 as Maria Friedenshort Priory, bringing monastic life back after two centuries. The Museum of Heavenly Theatre in the former carriage house preserves large-format canvas and wooden panel paintings depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ from 1750.
