Kronberg Castle, Medieval rock castle in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany
Kronberg Castle is a medieval fortress sitting on a hill above the town of Kronberg im Taunus, made up of stone towers, thick walls, and a well-preserved keep. The complex is split into an upper and a lower section, built at different times, and parts of it still stand in very good condition.
The castle was built in the early 13th century by the von Kronberg family, who used it as their seat of power for generations. After the family line ended in the 15th century, the castle passed to Hessian rule and gradually lost its role as a military stronghold.
The castle represents medieval rule in the region, and its name reflects the Kronberg family's power. Today, visitors can observe the layouts that show how nobility lived here and governed the surrounding lands.
The castle is within walking distance from the center of Kronberg im Taunus, reached by a short uphill path through the old town. Wear sturdy shoes, as some sections of the path are uneven and can be slippery after rain.
Part of the castle now operates as a luxury hotel built within the old stone walls, allowing guests to sleep inside a structure that is over 800 years old. The hotel bar is known for one of the largest whisky collections in the region.
