Streitkirche, church building in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany
The Streitkirche is a church building in Kronberg im Taunus constructed between 1737 and 1739 in baroque style. The substantial structure displays classical features of that era and is now protected as a cultural monument.
Construction began in 1737 when the town sought to build a Catholic church next to the existing Protestant church. The structure was completed in 1739 following intense opposition from the local Protestant community, which pursued legal action against the project.
The church takes its name from the disputes between Catholics and Protestants that arose during its construction. It stands directly next to the Protestant Johanniskirche, visibly showing how different religious communities existed side by side in the town.
The building is centrally located in Kronberg im Taunus and is easily accessible by car or public transportation. Visitors can view the exterior and explore nearby historical sites including the adjacent Protestant church.
The church tower was dismantled after completion because conflicts over the building were never fully resolved. Later it was repurposed and served as a pharmacy with living quarters before being converted to house art galleries and shops in modern times.
