Hesselberg, Hill and geotope in Middle Franconia, Germany

Hesselberg is the highest point in Middle Franconia at 689 meters and sits roughly 60 kilometers southwest of Nuremberg. The mountain consists of Jurassic limestone and offers clear views across the surrounding landscape from its summit.

People lived on this mountain during Stone and Bronze Age times, as shown by archaeological remains found there. Fortification structures from the Urnfield period demonstrate that the site later served as a strategic location.

The mountain has served as a gathering place for religious communities for centuries, and today educational programs shape how people experience the site. Visitors encounter spaces designed for reflection and communal activities that make this peak a meeting point for people from across the region.

Various hiking trails of different difficulty levels lead to the summit and are well-marked. On clear days, visitors can see far across the landscape toward the Alps in the distance.

The mountain earned recognition as one of Bavaria's 100 finest geotopes in 2005, largely due to its Jurassic fossils. The rock layers tell the story of an ancient sea that once covered this area millions of years ago.
