Drachenfels Railway, Rack railway in Königswinter, Germany
The Drachenfels Railway is a mountain railway in Königswinter that carries passengers up a route of about 1.5 kilometers. The line overcomes an elevation gain of roughly 220 meters and passes through steeper sections with gradients reaching about 20 percent.
The railway was built in 1883 and initially carried passengers uphill using steam locomotives. In 1953 it was electrified and switched to electric power.
The railway connects visitors to cultural sites across the region and makes historical locations easily accessible. It has become part of how people experience the natural landscape and heritage of the area.
The railway runs regularly between March and October with frequent departures. During the colder months there are fewer trains, and in December operations stop completely.
Four electric railcars from the 1950s shape the character of the line and run regularly. A specially constructed vehicle from 1979 completes the fleet and reflects the long operational history of the system.
