Brennerei Elmendorf

Brennerei Elmendorf is a building complex of several structures erected between 1760 and 1903 that blends castle-like architecture with industrial elements. The site displays thick walls, distinctive rooflines, and functional spaces that once served grain spirit production.

Founded in 1689 by Cordt and Margaretha Agnesa Lütgert, the distillery produced grain spirits for over 3 centuries. It closed in 2001 after evolving from a craft operation into an industrial facility.

The distillery was a major employer in Gütersloh and shaped the city's identity for generations. Its grain spirits gained regional recognition and provided economic stability for many families.

The building complex now houses an eyewear manufacturing company and can be viewed from outside. A historic oak barrel from 1902 is displayed at a nearby square and is accessible to visitors.

The 1902 oak barrel held a capacity of 20,000 liters and was so large it was displayed at international trade fairs. This reveals how proud the distillery was of its technical achievement and production capacity.
