Rieselfelder Braunschweig, Septic drain field in Brunswick, Germany
Rieselfelder Braunschweig is a large-scale wastewater treatment facility that covers a vast area where water undergoes purification in several basins after initial processing. The grounds feature pathways and viewing points that allow visitors to observe the water surfaces and surrounding landscape.
The facility was expanded in 1991 with a Meander System that guides water through the grounds in a flowing pattern while supporting natural purification processes. This system mimics the movement of a natural river and improves the biological purification of water.
The site functions as a stopover point for migratory birds and draws birdwatchers from the area who observe different species throughout the seasons. People visit to experience nature and discover the diversity of bird life.
The grounds are accessible via several marked trails that wind through the area offering different vantage points. Visits work best in dry weather, and sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground can be muddy.
The site hosts more than 300 different bird species, including protected kinds like red kites and lapwings, which find shelter and food here. The waters provide habitat for a special population of shelducks that have established their southernmost breeding colony in Lower Saxony.
