Nordfriedhof, Cemetery and heritage park in Ravensberg district, Kiel, Germany
Nordfriedhof is a 16-hectare (40-acre) cemetery in the Ravensberg district with tree-lined paths, memorial monuments, and a yellow brick chapel at its entrance. The grounds feature quiet walkways passing rows of graves and monuments that give shape to the entire space.
Established in 1878 as a garrison cemetery, this site served from the beginning as a burial ground for military personnel. The grounds preserve layers of military history through graves spanning different periods and conflicts.
The cemetery displays different architectural styles through its monuments and gravestones, each reflecting how people remembered the dead across different eras. Walking through the grounds, you can see the varied designs that show how mourning and remembrance took many forms over time.
The grounds are open during daylight hours and are easily reached by bus lines 6 and 91/92. Parking is available for visitors, making it convenient to explore the sprawling property.
The site incorporates earthen walls from a former shooting range that originally caught ammunition before becoming a cemetery. These remnants of military infrastructure shape the landscape today and remain visible as you walk through the grounds.
