Box-Berg, Mountain peak in Naturpark Aukrug, Germany
Box-Berg is a hill located in Naturpark Aukrug in Schleswig-Holstein, rising to about 77 meters above the surrounding landscape. The area features mixed woodlands, open meadows, and heath zones connected by various walking paths.
This elevation formed during the Saale glacial period approximately 120,000 years ago when glaciers shaped the geological structure of the region. The ice age landscape continues to define the character of the entire area.
The name comes from Old German 'Booksberg', meaning beech forest, which reflects the historical presence of beech trees that once dominated this woodland. Visitors can still see deciduous forests today that shape the character of the surrounding landscape.
The site is maintained by the Kurt and Erika Schrobach Foundation with careful management of forest growth and heath preservation. Bring proper footwear and be prepared for changing weather conditions typical of this northern region.
The Foundation has protected this area since 2008 and actively supports the development of natural forest growth. This creates a refuge for native wildlife and plants that increasingly struggle to find such undisturbed spaces.
