Pferderennbahn Gotha-Boxberg, Horse racing venue in Gotha, Germany.
Pferderennbahn Gotha-Boxberg is a horse racing venue in the southwestern part of Gotha, featuring a wooden grandstand built in an English style along with stables, paddocks, and an indoor riding hall. The whole site sits across a hilly landscape and also includes large open training areas alongside the track itself.
The site was established in 1842 as a military drill ground and was later converted for horse racing. It became an official racing track in 1878 under the patronage of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
The name Boxberg comes from the rolling hills that shape the terrain and remain clearly visible today. The track follows these natural rises, giving it a different profile compared to flat racing circuits.
The grounds are easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, as the different areas are clearly separated and connected by paths. On race days it is worth arriving early, since parking and access points can fill up quickly.
In 1912 the airship LZ 11 Viktoria-Luise flew directly over the grounds while horse races were taking place below. This meeting of traditional horse sport and early flight drew considerable attention at the time.
