Johann-Baptist-Kirche Cologne, Roman Catholic church in Altstadt-Süd, Germany

Johann-Baptist-Kirche is a church in Cologne's Altstadt-Süd neighborhood with a prominent western tower that shapes the skyline. Inside, the space follows a basilica layout with a central nave and side aisles that divide the interior into distinct areas.

First mentioned in 948 and attested as a parish church from 1080, St. Johann Baptist stood beside the Teutonic Order's St. Katharina church from 1219 until secularisation. Bombing in 1943–1945 destroyed the tower completely and the choir down to its base, while parts of the side aisles and the nave survived. Architect Karl Band rebuilt it in 1960–1962 as a basilica with a new brick west tower enclosing the old nave.

Since 2009 the church has been CRUX, the youth pastoral centre of the Archdiocese of Cologne, and a church café was partitioned off during the renovation. The name recalls John the Baptist, to whom the church is dedicated; the 1400 bell "Antonina" was cast by Johannes Duisterwalt and consecrated to John the Baptist and St. Antonina, whose reliquary shrine from the second half of the 14th century is kept inside.

The church stands on Severinstraße in Altstadt-Süd, its west tower set back behind the street-level building with the arched doorway. Since the 2009 renovation the interior has housed CRUX, the archdiocese's youth pastoral centre, with a church café partitioned off from the worship space. The tower is 44 m high; the Severinsbrücke and Nord-Süd-Stadtbahn run close by.

On 29 September 2004 the 44-metre tower tilted 77 cm westward after a supply shaft was driven 14 m below the church for the Nord-Süd-Stadtbahn. Six steel props braced it, the Severinsbrücke was closed, and on 26 October 2005 hydraulic presses raised the west side in 10-mm steps by 13.5 cm; the repair cost about one million euros, paid by the Cologne transport operator's insurer.
