St. Gregorius im Elend, Baroque Revival church in Altstadt-Süd, Germany
St. Gregorius im Elend is a Catholic church built in a baroque revival style in the Altstadt-Süd neighborhood of Cologne. It has a single-nave layout with a rectangular plan, and the interior features decorative elements drawn from late baroque tradition.
The church was built in 1765 and suffered heavy damage during the Second World War. The outer walls survived and the interior was rebuilt, with the reconstruction completed in 1967.
The name "im Elend" comes from a medieval term for misery or exile, and refers to the burial ground that once stood here for those rejected elsewhere. That origin still shapes how many people relate to this place today.
The church sits in the southern old town near Katharinengässchen and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Visitors are welcome during opening hours, either for services or to walk through the interior on their own.
The ground beneath the church once served as a burial site for people who were excluded from other cemeteries, such as the homeless and non-Catholics. That original function is what gave the site its name long before any building stood here.
