Bilstein Castle, Medieval castle in Lennestadt, Germany
Bilstein Castle is a fortification in Lennestadt with two round towers measuring 8 meters in diameter, connected by a tunnel running beneath the castle courtyard. A brick bridge provides access between these structures.
The fortress was built between 1202 and 1225 and served as an important regional stronghold. Following a siege in 1445, it came under the control of the Electorate of Cologne, reshaping local power dynamics.
The central section has a terrace with an old linden tree that serves as a natural gathering place. The outer area with its timber-framed building and event hall remains active for local celebrations and community meetings.
The site has been in use as a youth hostel since 1927, providing visitor accommodation. The location is easy to explore on foot and remains accessible throughout the year for those wanting to view the exterior and grounds.
The fortification sits atop rock formations with sheer drops on three sides, meaning only the northeastern approach required defensive structures. This natural defensive advantage shaped the location's strategic importance for centuries.
