Burg Botzlar, Medieval castle in Selm, Germany
Burg Botzlar is a two-story stone castle in Selm featuring six window axes and corner blocks characteristic of early German fortifications. The structure sits on raised ground surrounded by earthen ramparts and ditches that still define the original defensive layout.
The castle was first recorded in 1282 and later came under the control of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. It suffered two destructions during conflicts with the Counts of Mark, events that shaped its long history.
The castle transformation into a civic center represents the adaptation of historical buildings for modern community purposes in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The grounds are freely accessible and invite walks around the ramparts. Since 2024 the castle serves as a civil wedding venue, making it possible to celebrate life events within its historic walls.
A citizens' foundation purchased the castle from the city of Selm in 2013 to preserve it for future generations. This rescue effort demonstrates how local communities work to save historic buildings from decline.
