Uni-Center, Residential high-rise building in Sülz, Germany
Uni-Center is a large residential building with a Y-shaped form rising 134 meters high, its three wings painted in orange, green, and yellow. The lower floors house shops, restaurants, and a parking garage, while nine elevators serve around 1,200 residents across 45 floors and 968 apartments.
Construction began in 1971 and finished in 1973, making this the first major residential development near the University of Cologne. Its completion marked a turning point in providing housing for the city's growing student population.
The building combines student housing with private apartments, creating a living space where different generations and ways of life exist alongside each other. This mix has shaped community life in the neighborhood and makes it a place where different people come together.
The colored facades help visitors and residents navigate easily and spot the building from a distance. The use of ground-floor shops and restaurants makes the lower areas accessible and welcoming for everyone.
In 1977, the security unit GSG 9 discovered evidence that RAF terrorists had used an apartment in the building to plan operations. This discovery connected the building to a significant chapter in recent German history.
