Burg Randeck, Medieval castle in Essing, Germany.

Burg Randeck is a medieval castle perched on a hilltop overlooking the Altmühlttal valley, built with stone walls, towers, and an underground dungeon. The structure displays the typical features of a fortified residence from that era, with its heavy defensive elements.

The castle began in the 11th century as a residence for the Randeck family and was later taken over by the Babon family from Abensberg, who controlled it through the 13th century. This transition marked a shift in regional power and the fortress's role in the area.

The castle's name reflects its location on a steep slope and served as a symbol of power for those who ruled it through the centuries. Today visitors can read the entrance inscription by Leonhard von Eck, which expresses a message about divine protection.

The easiest access to the site is from Essing, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the path up to the castle is steep. The best time to visit is during dry weather, when the walkways are safe to navigate.

The bergfried tower of the castle remains intact and allows visitors to climb it for views over the surrounding landscape. In medieval fortifications, this tower served as the last refuge during a siege.
