Burg Rennenberg

Burg Rennenberg is a castle ruin near Linz am Rhein featuring a distinctive round tower and rectangular residential building set on elevated ground. The fortification rises above the Altenbach valley with commanding views of the surrounding landscape.

The castle was founded before 1250 by the Lords of Rennenberg as a regional stronghold. Ownership later transferred to other hands, eventually passing into the control of ecclesiastical authorities as the family's rule declined.

The fortress was home to the Rennenberg family and symbolized the power of Rhine nobility throughout the area. It represented the rule of a local noble family whose influence shaped the region for centuries.

The site is open for visitors to explore, though the ruins show signs of age and are gradually overtaken by vegetation. Those visiting should be prepared for uneven terrain and limited structural stability.

The tower was heightened in the 19th century to serve as a viewpoint for a planned landscape park that was never constructed. This unusual modification reflects the ambitions of past owners who attempted to transform the ruins into a recreational destination.
