Burg Rennenberg, Medieval castle ruins near Linz am Rhein, Germany.
The castle stands at 349 meters elevation, featuring a circular tower and rectangular residential building overlooking the Altenbach valley north of Linz.
Built before 1250 for the Lords of Rennenberg, the castle changed ownership from the Counts of Sayn to the Archbishop of Cologne through a contract.
The fortress represents the power structure of Rhine nobility, serving as the ancestral seat of the Rennenberg family until their male line ended in 1585.
The ruins remain accessible to visitors, though the structures continue to deteriorate due to limited maintenance and natural vegetation growth.
The castle's tower was heightened in the 19th century to serve as a viewing point for a planned landscape park that never materialized.
