Schloss Rennenberg

Schloss Rennenberg is a medieval fortified residence built on a hillside above Linz am Rhein with crenellated walls and thick stone construction. The interior rooms show medieval floor plans with chambers, staircases, and hearths that give insight into how people lived here centuries ago.

The castle emerged in medieval times as a defensive stronghold controlling the Rhine Valley and was inhabited and expanded by noble families of the region. Over the centuries it underwent various rebuildings and eventually lost its military purpose, but continued as a residence.

The castle represents a meeting point for local celebrations and educational programs that highlight the architectural traditions of German defensive structures.

The castle is reachable on foot from Linz am Rhein, with early morning or late afternoon offering better light for exploring. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes due to uneven ground and stairs inside the structure.

Many visitors overlook the preserved arrow slits in the outer walls, through which archers once fired down into the Rhine Valley. These details reveal how physically embedded the defensive purpose was in the building itself.
