Castle Rothenstein

Castle Rothenstein consists of ruins from a medieval hill fortress situated on a forested elevation in Bad Grönenbach with views over the surrounding landscape. The remaining stone walls reveal portions of the original structure and allow visitors to understand how such a fortified position was built and arranged.

The fortress was founded in 1037 and passed through the hands of different families over the centuries, including the Pappenheims in the 15th century. It eventually came under control of Kempten Abbey in 1692, which held the site until it fell into decline.

The castle once served as a residence for the Rothenstein family and later other regional rulers who displayed their power from this hilltop position. It symbolized control over the trade routes and lands of the surrounding area at that time.

To reach the castle, visitors follow established hiking trails through the forest and up the hillside. The path is not wheelchair accessible, and wearing sturdy footwear with adequate time to navigate the elevation comfortably is advisable.

The walls contain visible remnants from different periods, showing how each family adapted the structure to their needs over time. These layers of change remain visible today through varying construction techniques and materials found in the surviving walls.
