Burg Dorndiel, Medieval water castle ruins in Dorndiel, Germany
Burg Dorndiel was a medieval water castle whose foundations lay on the grounds of the former Dorndiel estate in the Odenwald region. The site now rests on private property with no visible castle remains visible today.
The castle was first documented in 1390 and belonged to the noble lords of Amorbach who managed small fiefs in the surrounding region. Over time the fortress was dismantled and replaced by a residence.
The half-timbered residence built after the castle stands as a registered cultural monument and shows the regional building traditions of the Odenwald area. The structure reflects how people lived here across the centuries.
The site is private property and can only be viewed from outside with the castle ruins location difficult to spot. It is recommended to gather information about the exact location beforehand as the spot has no markers or signs.
The fortress went through multiple name changes from Dorndieler Castle to Dorndieler Estate, Palatinate Court and finally Pfalzhof reflecting its evolving role and ownership. These shifts in naming mirror how the site transformed from military stronghold to residential property.
