Burg Röthgen

Burg Röthgen is a medieval fortification in Eschweiler consisting of a two-winged main structure separated by a moat from a three-winged outer bailey. Remnants of brick fortifications are still visible and form the outer defensive lines of the complex.

Edmund von Röthgen first documented the fortress in 1348 and established it as a strategic defense point for Jülich holdings in the forest region. Since its founding, the complex shaped the defensive landscape of the area.

The structure displays Gothic architectural elements in its core and preserves medieval construction techniques through its rubble stone design. Visitors can observe how the stones are layered and worked, which is typical of fortifications built during that period.

The outer bailey currently houses an active riding school, while the main castle section serves as private residential quarters. Visitors should note that these uses may limit access to certain areas.

Archaeological studies disproved local theories about an underground passage connecting this site to the nearby Nothberger Burg. The geographical conditions make such a connection physically impossible.
