Burg Scharfenstein, Medieval castle in Leinefelde-Worbis, Germany.
Burg Scharfenstein is a castle ruin perched on a 480-meter-high spur at the northwestern edge of Eichsfeld-Hainich Nature Park. The complex features original ring walls and a defensive tower alongside modern facilities including a multipurpose building with sanitary amenities.
The structure was first documented in 1209 but was destroyed by Landgrave Ludwig IV of Thuringia just a decade later in 1219. It was subsequently rebuilt during the 13th century with enhanced defensive structures.
The ruins now serve as a venue for outdoor concerts and cultural events throughout the year. The site has transformed from a defensive stronghold into a gathering place for the community.
The site is easily accessible in good weather and offers views across the surrounding landscape. Wear sturdy footwear as the pathways and ramps crossing the plateau can be uneven.
The castle has used geothermal energy for heating since 2006, blending medieval history with modern technology. The site is home to a whiskey distillery, coffee roastery, and hotel, creating an unexpected mix of attractions.
