St. Bonifatius, Catholic parish church in Leinefelde, Germany.
St. Bonifatius is a Catholic parish church in the Südstadt district of Leinefelde, a town in Thuringia. The building has a tent-like roof with an open entrance hall and stands out clearly in its surroundings.
The building was completed in 1993 as the final church construction project under the church development program of the German Democratic Republic. Its completion came during the transition period and marks the end of an era of state-regulated church construction.
The large rose window at the altar side depicts the Heavenly Jerusalem through glasswork created by artist Christof Grüger. This window shapes the interior with its glowing colors and its symbolic representation of the biblical vision.
The interior offers ample space for visitors and is accessible through the open entrance area. The organ is regularly available for musical events and gives the space acoustic depth.
Instead of a bell tower, the building holds a single bell in a niche of the entrance roof, crowned by a cross. This solution followed structural and design considerations of the construction period.
