Ruine Frankenberg, Medieval fortification ruins in Schmalkalden, Germany.

Ruine Frankenberg is a medieval castle complex in Schmalkalden with a triple ring wall system and a rectangular keep built from substantial sandstone blocks. The site displays the layered defensive structure typical of its period, with moats and remaining sections of a residential palace.

The castle was built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries to protect the trade route connecting Frankfurt and Erfurt. It was constructed by the von Stein family and became part of the regional network of medieval defensive positions.

The keep belonged to the von Stein family and symbolized their power in the region. Today the ruins speak to how such structures represented control over important trade networks of their time.

The ruins are freely accessible and can be reached from the Werra-Burgen-Steig hiking trail, which connects multiple castles in the area. The walk up is moderate with regular rest points and viewpoints along the way.

The keep underwent restoration in the 1980s and now serves as an observation tower with clear views across the Rosatal valley. This repurposing preserves the structure while giving visitors an unexpected vantage point for exploring the surrounding landscape.
