Sachsenstein, Memorial stone in Breitungen, Germany.
The Sachsenstein memorial stone stands on the summit plateau of Berg Pleß, constructed from hewn sandstone with a decorated enclosure around it.
Duke Ernst Ludwig I of Sachsen-Meiningen ordered the construction of this monument in 1722 following the death of court hunter Johannes Sachs in a hunting incident.
The memorial stone displays inscriptions on both sides, with the front commemorating Johannes Sachs and the back containing reflections on mortality.
The monument underwent restoration in 2008 and received a new foundation next to the Pleß tower, with the project costing 5000 euros.
Between 1962 and 1981, the stone remained in a roadside ditch after its removal from a military zone until local residents rescued and relocated it.
