Sachsenstein, Memorial stone in Breitungen, Germany.
Sachsenstein is a memorial stone made of hewn sandstone that stands on the summit plateau of Berg Pleß with a decorated enclosure surrounding it. The structure sits near the Pleß tower and forms part of a unified commemorative site at the mountain's top.
Sachsenstein was ordered by Duke Ernst Ludwig I of Sachsen-Meiningen in 1722 after court hunter Johannes Sachs died in a hunting accident. The monument was created to preserve his memory and became part of the commemorative tradition at the mountain site.
The stone displays inscriptions on both sides that remember court hunter Johannes Sachs and reflect on human life. These carved messages speak to visitors exploring the story of the location.
The memorial sits on a mountain plateau and is best reached on foot, as the path is steep. Visitors should plan for sturdy footwear and allow time for the climb.
Between 1962 and 1981, the stone lay in a roadside ditch after being removed from a military zone. Local residents discovered and rescued it, later restoring it to its current location.
