Burg Friedeburg

Burg Friedeburg, Medieval castle ruins in Friedeburg, Germany.

Burg Friedeburg is a 14th-century fortress in East Frisia featuring characteristic Gothic elements such as pointed arches and ribbed vaults. The remains spread across the site and display the typical layout of a military stronghold with wall and foundation sections.

The fortress was founded in 1359 by nobleman Edon Wiemken with architect Fredon von Wangern to secure the border against the counts of Oldenburg. In the 18th century, Frederick the Great destroyed it, after which a windmill operated on the site starting in 1775.

The castle demonstrates how the local nobility asserted their presence in the northern German landscape through imposing structures. Today, visitors can still trace the layout and see the Gothic arches that speak to medieval building practices.

The site is largely open to visitors, with informational signs explaining the architecture and history at several points. A viewing platform near the former keep foundations offers a good view across the surrounding plains and helps understand the fortress's strategic position.

Frederick the Great's destruction was so thorough that few walls remain higher than a few meters, and for over 200 years only a windmill stood on the original site. This unusual intermediate use makes the location a rare example of human continuity despite physical erasure.
