Burg Fürstenstein

Burg Fürstenstein is a medieval fortification near Albungen with a distinctive residential tower made of sandstone. The tower features three stone levels and an upper timber-framed story, measuring approximately 13 by 8 meters.

The Counts of Bilstein built the castle before 1264 and sold their feudal rights to Landgraf Heinrich I of Hesse in 1301. The Diede family took control in 1344 and held it through centuries of regional changes until 1807.

The chapel inside the residential tower shows how faith and daily life were woven together in medieval castles. From outside, visitors can see the religious traces preserved in the building's design.

The castle stands on a hilltop near Eschwege and is visible from outside but closed to public entry. Visitors can photograph the site from a distance and view its architecture from the surrounding paths.

The Diede family held this castle for over 460 years, an unusually long period of continuous ownership for a small fortification. This stability was rare in a region marked by frequent political changes.
