Burg Adelebsen, Medieval castle in Adelebsen, Germany
Burg Adelebsen is a castle built on a sandstone cliff at the southern edge of Adelebsen, dominated by a nine-story sandstone tower that serves as both residence and defensive structure. Around this central tower, additional buildings and courtyards complete the fortress complex.
The castle was founded in 1234 when the Lords of Wibbecke settled on the rock and started construction. After roughly 800 years, the male line of the family came to an end, and a foundation took over the care of the structure in 1947.
The castle displays architectural layers from medieval times through the modern era, reflecting how the place evolved across centuries of occupation. Visitors can see these different periods mixed together as they walk through the rooms and explore the structure.
Visitors enter the castle through the outer fortifications, which lead to the main courtyard area. Plan your visit for dry weather, since reaching the castle involves climbing paths on the rocky slope.
The residential tower ranks among Europe's largest medieval keeps, built to impressive proportions that make it stand out from typical fortifications. This exceptional scale makes the tower a rare example of medieval defensive architecture.
