Burg Harste, Medieval castle ruins in Bovenden, Germany.
Burg Harste is a castle site in Bovenden with remains from medieval times. The grounds are surrounded by water-filled moats and today house administrative buildings alongside preserved stone walls.
The site was first recorded in documents in 1294 and served as a residence in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It suffered several destructions and was rebuilt multiple times before being converted into an administrative building in 1727.
The place takes its name from an early settlement in the region. Today you can still see the water-filled moats that once protected the grounds and continue to shape the landscape.
The grounds are easy to access and the buildings are visible from the outside. You can explore and photograph the water moats and stone structures from several viewpoints.
The site stood at a toll station where old trade routes from Hildesheim and Göttingen crossed. This location made it a control point for medieval commerce in the region.
