Burg Alt-Hohensolms, Medieval castle in Hohenahr, Germany.
Burg Alt-Hohensolms is a medieval fortress situated on the Altenberg hill at approximately 442 meters in elevation. The complex features defensive stone walls and a reconstructed lookout tower added in the 19th century that dominates the site.
Founded in 1321 by the Counts of Solms, the fortress was built to protect their territory from the Landgraves of Hesse. It controlled key trade routes north of Wetzlar and held strategic importance in the region's political landscape.
Inside the fortress stands a chapel from 1448 originally dedicated to St Christopher. It now serves the local community as an evangelical church where people gather for worship and religious occasions.
The fortress now operates as a conference venue for the Evangelical Church in Hesse, with meeting spaces and lodging available. Visitors should check ahead to confirm access possibilities, as the site is used for church gatherings and events.
Following destruction around 1349, the entire fortress was relocated and rebuilt about 2 kilometers north of its original site. This remarkable shift represents the determination to restore and maintain the castle despite significant challenges.
