Altenberg, Cultural heritage monument on a hill in Hesse, Germany
Altenberg is a hill in the Gladenbach Uplands in Hesse, rising to about 442 meters (1,450 feet) and showing the geological features of the Rhine Slate Mountains. The surroundings consist of natural formations accessible for walking and exploration.
The first documented mention of the place dates to 1323 and refers to Hohensolms Castle, a fortress of the Counts of Solms-Burgsolms. This castle was strategically important for controlling the region.
The hill holds the status of a cultural heritage monument, marking its importance to the history of the Hesse region. Visitors today use the place for walking and exploring the nature that surrounds it.
You can reach Altenberg via the L3053 road, which leads up to various routes. Several walking trails start from here and connect the summit to surrounding areas.
An observation tower from the 1830s still stands on the summit and was built by Prince Ferdinand of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich. From this tower you can look far across the landscape and see the surrounding hills and valleys.
