Burg Sponeck in Sasbach, Medieval castle ruin in Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl, Germany
Burg Sponeck is a castle ruin positioned on a rocky ridge near Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl in Baden-Württemberg, commanding views over the Rhine valley on three sides. The site displays characteristic features of a hilltop fortress with partially preserved walls and a distinctive defensive tower.
The castle was built atop a late Roman fort constructed in the 4th century under Emperor Valentinian I, whose foundations remain visible in the archaeological record. The site later developed into a medieval hilltop fortress that controlled this strategically important Rhine position.
In the 20th century, the castle became home to painter Hans Adolf Bühler, who transformed it into an artist studio and brought creative life back to the ruins. Today, the surrounding grounds feature art installations that reflect this artistic heritage.
Access to the castle itself is restricted since it remains privately owned and opens to visitors only twice yearly. The surrounding gardens with their art installations are freely accessible year-round and provide good vantage points to view the ruins from outside.
The defensive tower features unusually thick walls and departs from typical Roman construction patterns with its square layout, suggesting later builders modified and adapted earlier structures to suit medieval defensive needs.
