Limburg Castle

Limburg Castle is a set of ruins perched on a northeastern peak of the Kaiserstuhl mountain, with views stretching across the Rhine Valley and surrounding vineyards. The remains include stone walls and foundations scattered across the hilltop, showing traces of the structure's former size and layout.

The site was inhabited in ancient times and gained importance during the medieval period when the Zähringer dukes constructed a fortified structure there. The fortress was later abandoned and has remained in ruins since then.

The ruins form part of a local educational trail that shares information about the area's heritage and wine-growing traditions. Visitors learn how this location shaped the identity of the surrounding communities.

The ruins can be reached via several hiking trails departing from Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl, each offering different difficulty levels. The climb is demanding, but hikers are rewarded with expansive views and should bring sturdy footwear.

During the World Wars, military observers positioned themselves at this strategic vantage point and left behind trenches and bunkers in the surrounding area. These traces from the 20th century remain partially visible, adding a different layer of history to the medieval fortification.
